White develops his Queen's Knight to support 3. e4, sometimes called the Veresov Opening. After Black's usual reply 2. ... d5, White may respond with 3. Bg5, leading to the Richter-Veresov Attack. Often transposes into the Chigorin Defence, the French Defence, or less commonly the Pirc Defence.

This position may also be reached via the move order 1.Nc3 Nf6 2.d4
